i really really wish parts of the Free! fandom would understand the difference between
a mutually beneficial relationship with behavioural patterns born of years of extensive time together, an evolving understanding of the other, and a willingness to put the other first when needed
makoto and haruka have a mutually beneficial relationship that they BOTH work to keep and that has evolved to reflect where they are in their lives.
they are not dependent on the other for ANY aspect of their lives. not even swimming. wanting someone to be there and needing someone to be there are two different things.
makoto isn’t dependent on anyone nor does he function as if he needs others to need him. he instead functions as if he shouldn’t rely on others because he doesn’t want to burden them. there is a difference. he doesn’t mother hen people so they need him constantly, he does it so that nobody has to do that for him. because he thinks giving everything he has to the point where he has nothing is better than others being without.
instead of him trying to get others to rely on him makoto actually tries to make himself almost invisible in any situation where he isn’t projecting positivity. and that includes haruka as well. haruka made it clear that he was worried and even flat out asked him, but every time makoto shut him out by sliding on a mask with a smile on it and saying “i’m fine”.
that’s not dependency that’s someone who views themself needing help (or depending on others) as a fault and burden for the other party. so it’s something he avoids at almost the cost of his life. literally.
i also wish people would stop cutting out sentences or half a scene to make a point all while disregarding characterization, narrative flow, overall story, and implications from an overall outside for their meta.
